Self-neglect and hoarding
Assessment of trauma, executive dysfunction, attachment to possessions, capacity, daily functioning and the least restrictive support required.
Trauma issues may affect:
- Survival strategies: a focus on immediate threat and sensory experiences that may contribute to self-neglect.
- Attachment: attachment to objects rather than people following painful experiences within relationships.
- Executive function: difficulty ordering, sorting, organising and preventing compulsive acquisition.
- Frontal lobe paradox: the person may be able to describe what they should do but struggle to put it into practice.
I can conduct needs assessments and decision-specific capacity assessments to identify which areas of life and daily living are affected. I can provide best-interests analysis, consider the least intrusive and least restrictive options, and create a practical plan of support.
Parenting capacity
A staged assessment of what a parent knows, what they say and what they can consistently put into practice to meet a child’s needs.
Parenting assessment requires consideration of three connected elements: what a person knows, what a person says and what a person can do. A parent may describe appropriate care but still struggle to translate that knowledge into reliable functional practice.
The assessment may include parenting capacity, decision-specific capacity assessment for the parent and parenting functional skills.
Parental understanding: what the parent understands about the child’s needs, risk, professional concerns and the actions required.
Functional parenting: what the parent can consistently initiate, organise, complete and sustain within ordinary daily care.
Barriers and practicable support: whether trauma, cognitive or executive-function difficulties, mental disorder, communication needs, coercion, environmental circumstances or unmet support needs may affect functioning, and what adjustments or interventions may assist.
My role is adult-focused. I do not act as the child’s social worker or Children’s Guardian.
Complex safeguarding matters
Analysis of how trauma, loss, poverty and adverse experiences affect daily living, risk, engagement and multi-agency safeguarding responses.
These matters often involve multiple, overlapping challenges that affect a person’s ability to remain safe, care for themselves and manage daily life.
I provide expert assessment, professional analysis and practical recommendations that help the Court and agencies understand the impact of trauma, loss, poverty and adverse experiences, and make informed, balanced and person-centred decisions.
My work can clarify functional difficulties, identify barriers within multi-agency practice, assess support needs and develop a realistic plan for moving forward.

Duty to the Court: my overriding duty is to assist the Court independently on matters within my professional expertise. That duty takes precedence over any obligation to the person or organisation instructing or paying me.
